Manly Tips: Injuries

This one hits a little bit too close to home, I can formally and publicly admit that I'm guilty of this and also incredibly dumb. A good amount of men feel the need to be "tough." Being tough means not admitting to your feelings, never letting those around you see you cry, doing your best not to react to pain, and not responding to a consistent problem you've had. Well, as I have been guilty of all those in the past and still am currently, those ideas of being "tough" are just wrong. The whole idea of being tough or what it means to be a man will be touched in a future post.

Rolling with the same idea of my "Just Talk" post, this is a pretty consistent issue for men. Those of you that work out, play sports, or work physical labor jobs. Let's all raise our hands collectively for the amount of times we've been injured and not said anything to anyone. To try and tough it out through the pain, or keep working. I won't lie to you, sometimes you can work through the pain. You can take care of it during your down time, and when crunch time appears again, you are ready to go. To those of you that can do this, first off let me admit that you are warriors, but in addition to that, you are also dumb.

Of course working through the injury depends on the extent of the injury. If you stub your toe and feel the need to call off of work for the day, you might want to rethink your line of work, or your own judgement of what an injury is. Pain is relative to you, but even if you have a high or a low pain threshold, you need to be able to judge if it's worth it to continue working through your pain or injury. I myself, think that I have a decent pain threshold, which leads me to a lot of stupid mistakes.

I bring it up every now and then, that as the writer of these posts it's my job to share a certain amount of vulnerability with each of you. Well let me again admit, I am an idiot. Aside from resembling my own idea of tough, I get caught up in the injury bug a lot. I work out what I consider religiously. Five to seven days a week every week. The only time I slow down is when I injure myself or over work my body. With the progress I want to make it'd probably be smarter to take a break once in a while, especially when I get injured. Alas, I have my pride and my idea of tough, so I'll work through the minor issues until they became major and I end up sidelining myself for days at a time.

So this is a PSA for each of you, but also I'm admitting something to myself. Ice your injuries, go see a doctor, stop by the jacuzzi once in a while or take a bath. Above all, I teased about stubbing your toe earlier as well, but remember that you know your body better than anyone else. No one on the planet is feeling the exact same way that your body is at any given time, it is unique to you.  Let your body heal and come back stronger. Your progress in whatever you are doing will not falter, as long as you take the time to respect your body and take care of yourself in the process.

A good man can admit when it's time, WashYourAss
