Let's Talk: Fight Back

Fighting back doesn't always have to be with your fists. Your actions, decisions, words, you can choose how you fight. Let me be clear, I am advocating fighting back, I am not advocating for a beating or a lashing out.

Fight back with your actions. Fighting back with your actions doesn't pertain to only fighting physically. When you are fighting back with your actions you are taking the physical side out of fighting. Whether you are fighting to repress, fighting to gain, or fighting to move forward. You need to fight. Fighting with your actions is running that extra mile a day, because you've been trying to lose weight. Fighting with your actions is cramming extra study time to ensure your future. Fighting back with your actions is working off those doubts around you, to show you are the best you can be.

Fight back with your decisions. Again not only pertaining to fighting physically. Fighting back with your decisions could be physical or mental. Each decision you make will lead to a harder or easier fight. We will be constantly fighting for as long as we live, even on the smallest scale. It'll make it easier if you are able to make the decisions that directly affect your fight. Your decisions tie hand in hand with your actions. If you make the correct decisions, your actions will follow suit, making your case for fighting that much stronger.

Fight back with your words. One of the simplest ways to fight back is choosing your words carefully. Fighting back with your words will start to range towards the more physical side of things, depending on the situation. Your actions and decisions up to this point, will affect the words you choose. If you aren't careful, the wrong words could lead to an altercation. A good man will diffuse a situation with his fists, a great man will diffuse a situation with his words.

Let's say everything else falls through and you find yourself in a situation with a physical fight about to take place. Well first, you never have to do anything you don't want to.

- In the situation you are alone, running is always on option. Running does not and will not ever make you a coward, especially if you did your best to diffuse the situation in the first place. If you find yourself in an altercation as a grown man and you really don't want to be a part of it, just run. If for some ungodly reason you find yourself being chased by another grown man, dip into a more public area. If somebody goes out of their way to chase you because they didn't like something you said, they have the maturity of a newborn giraffe. And you definitely don't need to bother with them.

- Running isn't an option. Well running usually won't be an option if these fights are taking place on a more consistent basis. This falls into more of a school scenario, where bullying becomes the main issue. Fighting back won't always be the best option here, maybe you'll just agitate the people bullying you. However, if you are younger, encourage your parents to put you in a martial art or a self defense class. Knowing to defend yourself is a classic characteristic of what makes a man. Knowing how to defend yourself will see it's own post in the future so look forward to that. Quick digression aside, it's said that if you show your bully that you aren't an easy target, the bully will leave you alone. In addition, learning how to fight will keep you from fighting. Those who practice a martial art will rarely to never feel the need to show those around them how "tough" they really are.

- You have to fight. Every other option failed and you find yourself in a fight. Whether you are defending the honor of your friend or just found yourself in a sticky situation. I again, encourage everybody that reads these post to take a martial art, it'll do wonders for your mental and physical health. In this specific scenario, let's say you are lost at sea without a paddle. Well, aside from any videos you might have ever seen online, don't fight with just your fists. Bite, eye poke, scratch, hit the ears, palm the nose, give them an Alabama vasectomy. *That'll be a term I should coin for future reference, meaning a solid kick to the twigs and berries. If all those options fail, use your head, literally use your head. Headbutt and break a nose, most fights will end when somebody breaks or damages their nose, so always try and aim for the nose. There is no shame in losing a fight, nor do you need to carry pride in winning one. The pride comes with protecting yourself or those you care about.
